The financial impact of stress in the workplace

Reflexology in the workplace, Ealing, Hanwell, Greenford, Chiswick and HammersmithMORI research shows that stress adversely affects over a third of the UK's working population, or around 8.5 million people. It impairs efficiency and accuracy, performance of physical tasks, planning, decision making and creativity. It increases tiredness and irritability, and weakens the immune system.

Of the 360 million working days lost every year in the UK - at a cost of £8 billion - half are stress related. As well as suffering this direct financial loss, companies may face legal claims for stress-related conditions.

How businesses are fighting stress

A number of overseas countries have been addressing the problem of stress in the workplace for several years. In Denmark, for instance, occupational health services have worked closely with employers to develop a flexible approach involving complementary therapies, particularly reflexology. The results have been impressive.

Odense Post Office has employed a full-time reflexologist since 1990. A 13.3% reduction in sickness and absenteeism has produced savings of around £100,000.

Ishoj Municipal Health Department recorded 2,499 fewer sick hours over a six-month period in which employees received reflexology treatment. Savings amounted to £21,490.

SAS Cargo saved an estimated £2,000 a month by giving staff access to reflexology.

Fonss and Hove, a firm of solicitors in Kolding, found greater motivation and enhanced performance in employees receiving reflexology treatment. After four years the need for treatment declined, owing to minimal sickness and absenteeism.

In the UK, the Danish example is now being followed by large and small businesses of all kinds, as well as city and borough councils, schools, hospitals and football teams.
